Simplicity Contest
The rules are simple. We have two words for you. You will use these two words to either create a piece of literature or a piece of visual art that represents these two words in a creative and surprising way! Wow us with your imagination!
Your two words are...

:bulletorange: We must have 3 entries in either category to continue with judging.

:bulletorange: You must upload to the "Current Contest" folder and mention the category

:bulletgreen: This is a group, not a dictatorship. Feel free to note me with any ideas or suggestions to make this group even better!
:bulletgreen: Please support other deviants in their art.
:bulletgreen: Hating, bullying, or any type of condescension will not be tolerated. Offenses will result in automatic banishment from the group.

Submission Guidlines

:bulletblue: Not sure which folder to submit to? Here's an in-depth look at the Folder Breakdown!
:bulletblue: 3 deviations allowed per deviant per week.
:bulletblue: Please, be tasteful with your art. Excessive gore, violence, or sexual situations must have a "Mature Content" filter. I'm not afraid to report offenders.
:bulletblue: Please submit to the proper journal.
:bulletblue: The "Current Contest" folder will be purged after each contest, and each deviation will be put in its proper place. Also, the "Current Contest" folder goes by different rules than the other folders do. To view them, click on the folder in the gallery.

Group Info

art noun \ˈärt\
: something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings…

No where in there does it say literature is not art! This is deviantArt, not deviantSketch or deviantPainting. We may not use many colors, but we are artists as well! Let's join together as written word artists and show dA what we are made of!

Fear not! We accept picture artists as well! Anyone can appreciate literature, and anyone can become a written word artist!

Let's have some fun, get to know each other, and support each other in our endeavors as artists!

Directions:  Use this poem as a springboard for your own writing.  Read the poem (out loud, preferably, as poetry is meant to be heard with the ear, not just inside the head).  Write down any words or phrases that jump out at you.  Use those words or phrases to write your own poem (or essay or story).  Place the piece in the Monthly Springboard Challenge folder by the 20th of the month, and read the other entries in it also!

This month, our poem is by Juan Felipe Herrara, the US Poet Laureate.

Enter The Void

I enter the void,
it has the shape of a viola:

Israel, Jenin, West Bank, Nablus—a rubble boy
shifts his scapula as if it was his continent, underground
Gazaground, I want to say—his only bone,

the rubble boy is a girl, I think,
her hair tossed, knotted and torn under
the green shank of fibers, tubes and shells.

She digs for her rubble father, I say rubble
because it is indistinguishable from ice, fire, dust,
clay, flesh, tears, concrete, bread, lungs, pubis, god,
say rubble, say water—

the rubble girl digs for her rubble mother,
occupation—disinheritance—once again,
I had written this somewhere, in a workshop, I think,
yes, it was an afternoon of dark poets with leaves, coffee
and music in the liquor light room.

A rock, perhaps it's a rock, juts out, two rocks
embrace each other, the shapes come to me easily,
an old poetic reflex—memoria, a nation underground,
that is it, the nation under-ground,
that is why the rocks cover it.

I forget to mention the blasts, so many things flying,
light, existence, the house in tins, a mother in rags.

It is too cold to expose her tiny legs,
the fish-shaped back—you must take these notes for me.

Before you go. See this
the pools of blood.

I ride the night, past the Yukon, past
South Laredo, past Odessa, past the Ukraine,
old Jaffa, Haifa and Istanbul, across clouds,
hesitant and porous, listen—

they are porous so we can glide
into them, this underbelly, this underground:
wound-mothers and sobbing fathers, they

leave, in their ribboned flesh, shores lisp
against nothingness, open—toward you,
they dissolve again into my shoes—

Hear the dust gong:
gendarme passports,

cloned maize men in C-130's, with tears
bubbling on their hands, pebbles
en route—we are all en route
to the rubblelands.

I want to chant a bliss mantra—
can you hear me?

I want to call for the dragon-slayer omchild.
I am on my knees again.

On the West Bank count
the waves of skull debris—a Hebrew letter
for "love" refuses me,
an Arabic letter for "boundary"
acknowledges me.

Sit on an embankment,
a dust fleece, there is a tidal wave ahead of me.

It will never reach me. I live underground, under the Dead Sea,
under the benevolent rocks and forearms and
mortar shells and slender naked red green
torsos, black,
so much black.
En route:

this could be a train, listen:
it derails into a cloud.

Happy to have you! I hope you enjoy being a part of our little family!

Already very impressed.  Probably one of the most active groups for at least "taking a peek" at posted work.  Some groups are so large that anything submitted is just swallowed up by the massive influx and lost... proverbial needles in haystacks.  Thanks for having me.

Excellent, I'm glad you like us so far. We really encourage group activity as well as suggestions! So, please, if you have any, let us know! This group is for its members.
